On November 18, 1967, the Landmark’s iconic 40ft tall revolving “L” sign was installed. It comprised four sections, which had to be carried up one at a time by a Piasecki H-21B Workhorse helicopter operated by Briles. It was number N9719Z. The original helicopter used to begin the process, couldn’t withstand the heavy load in the high wind that day, so the H-21B was called in. The helicopter eventually found its retirement in a neglected junkyard. This piece of aviation history seemed destined for obscurity until Scroggins Aviation recognized its potential and acquired it. This company, known for its expertise in sourcing and restoring vintage aircraft for cinematic purposes, took on the task of bringing the helicopter back to its former glory. Scroggins Aviation’s restoration process involves meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that every part of the helicopter is restored to both aesthetic and functioning standards suitable for its new role in the film industry. This endeavor not only preserves a piece of aviation history but also repurposes it in a creative and dynamic way, bringing a once-functional aircraft back into the spotlight on the silver screen.
